When we opened Collingswood Windsor Chairworks in January of 2004, we envisioned a venue that would allow people to experience the craft of Windsor chairmaking first hand. It was our desire to share our enthusiasm for chairmaking with people who otherwise might never be exposed to it. We put a great deal of effort into creating an environment that would be comfortable and pleasant for our clients as well as those who were merely curious. I believe we accomplished this and more. Over the past two years we entertained a great number of people in our shop and gained quite a few friends along the way. Although I enjoyed demonstrating and discussing chairmaking, one thing became quite clear. I was spending more time talking about chairs than building them. I found it impossible to produce chairs in a timely manner and hence my clients suffered.

As you might imagine maintaining a storefront requires a great deal of time and effort. In order to offset operating expenses we began retailing various products such as tinwork, primitives, candles, milk paint and so on. Unfortunately there was not enough of this business to carry the store.

The expense and time commitment of operating a store front combined with reduced productivity has prompted us to reconsider our approach to our business, so as of December 31, 2005 our store will be closed. However we will still be making chairs. We will be relocating the shop to our home were we will be able to concentrate on Chairmaking instead of shopkeeping.
